Our Summer Adventure summer reading program for kids and adults kicks off on June 1. Sign up to receive a packet of activities & challenges, then turn in completed packets to be eligible for fabulous prizes!

Open Art Studio

Fridays from 1-3pm, May 6, 13, 20, 27

Bring your works in progress and supplies to this weekly drop-in art program. This is an opportunity to create in a collaborative environment with other artists. No formal instruction will be provided, but informal critiquing for those who want it is encouraged. Table covers will be provided. There is a sink in the room for basic cleanup (please do not bring turpentine).

Remembering D-Day (2 part series)

Historian Kelvin W. Cole will be here for two nights June 6 & 13 to discuss the historic events of D-Day and Normandy.The fall of Western Europe to the Nazis and the construction of the defenses and “The  Atlantic Wall” in their bid to keep it. The “Perfect Storm” of events that descended upon the Nazis’ “Fortress Europe” and resulted in the Allied victory with the collapse and German surrender eleven months later. Registration required for each program.

Cat Tales Writers Group

Thursday, June 9, 2022, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Join us for a monthly open writing group that can help answer your questions on writing, editing, grammar, and publishing. Read a selection of your work to the group for general constructive feedback, or discuss a book you’ve read that might help someone else. Registration is required.

Loft Knitters

Wednesday, June 15, 2022, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Our monthly knitting group. Come socialize, learn, share your techniques with other knitters.  All levels of adult knitters’ welcome, please bring your own yarn and knitting needles. Registration is required.

Dance Party at Mixville Park

Friday, June 17, 2022, 5:00 – 8:00pm

We’re kicking off our Summer Adventure Reading Program at Mixville Park with a fun dance party! There will be activities for all ages including, a DJ, lawn games, balloon twisting, volleyball, gaga ball pit, chalk drawing, and a special character appearance! Please register so that we can contact you in the event of a weather-related cancellation (rain date is June 24).

Pete The Cat Music

Tuesday, June 21, 2022, 10:00 – 10:45am

On his way to the Music Room, Pete’s white shoes get dirty but he just keeps going along and singing his songs. Pete learns a cool song, a groovy dance and discovers his own boogie shoes!

Best for Ages 1-6. Registration is required.

Intro to Improv

Tuesday, June 21, 2022, 3:00 – 4:00pm

Join us for a program where everything is made up! Play acting games to learn the basics of improvisational comedy. For teens in grades 7-12 registration is required.

Hooked on Llamas

Wednesday, June 22, 2022, 3:00 – 4:00pm

Debbie from Country Quilt Llama Farm will bring one of her llama friends to the library for a special storytime! Children will be able to touch and pet a real llama.

Best for ages 3-8. Registration is required.

Hot Cat Jazz Band in concert at Mixville Park

Wednesday, June 22, 2022, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Join us for our summer concert series kick-off!  The Hot Cat Jazz Band summer concert in June will be fun for the entire family.  The Hot Cats repertoire includes swing standards, big band hits, Dixieland favorites and classic rock. Admission to Mixville Park is free for concert attendees.  Just tell the staff at the entrance gate that you are there for the concert.  The concert will begin at 6:30, but you are welcome to come early and enjoy a picnic or a stroll at beautiful Mixville!  Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs and some bug spray.   Raindate: June 23.

Bear Scavenger Hunt

Armchair travelers, this one’s for you! Join Anglophile and former UK resident Claire Evans for a lively discussion about this underappreciated English destination, Cornwall, England’s far west country bordered by the North Atlantic and the English Channel. Zombie School: SFX Makeup Workshop for grades 5-12

Tuesday, June 28, 2022, 4:00 – 5:30pm

Decimated Designs will teach you how to transform into a monster, zombie, and more! We’ll cover the do’s and don’ts of special effects makeup, hygiene, how to get started, and some tricks you can use to improve your costumes or makeup at home. Seats are limited, registration is required.

The Bad Guys Book Party

What’s Happening (Virtually) at Cheshire Library in June

While much of our programming is still online, we’re excited to be able to offer some new outdoor programs at our local parks this summer!

June Teen Volunteering Challenges

Earn community service hours by submitting a photo, video, or other content that may be added to CPL’s social media pages! Each submission will be awarded 2 community service hours. June’s challenges include:

  • Art: It’s the month of Junebugs and Junicorns- draw your favorite bug, or a unicorn!
  • Writing: Write about your most memorable vacation.
  • Food: June has a bunch of ice cream/frozen yogurt-related holidays, so make something fun with ice cream or frozen yogurt.
  • Reading: June is Pride Month- read a story by or about someone from the LGBT+ community, fact or fiction.
  • More Reading: Read a graphic novel. When you’re done, continue the story with artwork in the style of the illustrator.
  • Even More Reading: For a week-long challenge, read a different book by the same author each day.

If you participate in the challenges, earn community service credit by submitting your creations so we can share them on our social media pages.

Book Buzz Teen Book Club: Shadow and Bone

All month long

This month we are going to read Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. Books will be provided and are yours to keep! To pick up your Book Buzz book, starting on June 1st, you must register for this event. Then you can either call the Children’s Desk (at 272-2245 x 33003) and schedule a Grab n Go pickup, or come into the library and pick up your book at the Children’s Desk.

River Cruising 101

Discover the world of European river cruising with Bella Europa Travel. In this informative program you will learn about the many options that exist as well as the differences between traditional and river cruising. U.S. Coast Guard Dixieland Jazz Band in concert at Mixville

Wednesday, June 23, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00pm

The Coast Guard Dixieland Jazz Band performs classic jazz, blues, and rags with a “New Orleans” flavor. Admission to Mixville Park (1300 Notch Road in Cheshire) is free for concert attendees.  Just tell the staff at the entrance gate that you are there for the concert.  The concert will begin at 6:30, but you are welcome to come early and enjoy a picnic or a stroll at beautiful Mixville!  This summer concert series is funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library and co-sponsored by the library and Cheshire’s Park and Recreation Department. 

Tips for the First-Time Travelers on a Budget

Thursday, June 24, 2021, 3:00 – 4:30pm

Join us we will learn how to  find the cheapest flights, go over luggage limitations, how to research and plan your own trip.  Learn how to use Google tools to make pages of links and a personalized map for walking or driving. We will go over the options for finding an affordable place to stay, and cover some other basics like safety, language and money. Trivia Night in the Park

Monday, June 28, 2021, 6:00 – 7:30pm

Come by yourself or bring your friends. Test your knowledge from general categories, including pop culture, current events, history, music, and of course literature! We will meet at Cheshire Park at the Pavilion. Masks must be worn over your nose and mouth during the entire program. Registration is required for this adult program.

Storytime @ the Park: Bartlem (Ages 3-5)

Enjoy an outdoor storytime at Bartlem Park full of books, music, and movement! You are welcome to bring your own blanket or towel to sit on. Best for ages 3-5.  Masks must be worn when you are not in your designated spot and social distancing will be observed. Space is limited and registration is required to attend. Please register each participant (caregivers and children). Registration begins 48 hours prior to each class. We will be meeting at the fields behind the playground.

Kellogg Environmental Center presents: INTO THE WOODS

Thursday Jul 3, 2014, 2:00 –  3:00       Expand your naturalist skills by solving mysteries of natural finds like footprints, feathers, twig chewings and objects seen around the state. Children will listen to Into the Woods: Who’s Been There and explore mysterious finds from nature. Lego Robots with the CHS MECHA RAMS

The robots have returned!
The summer G3 programs will offer a special 3-part event. Guest instructors and teen members of the Cheshire High School MECHA RAMS Robotics team will provide robotics demonstrations to our G3 kids. Kids will also get hands on experience with simple robotics using Lego robot kits and will receive instruction from their teen mentors, wrapping up with a friendly team competition on July 24th!    Register on our website.

Zoology for Kids with Animal Embassy

Thursday Jul 17, 2014, 1:00 PM  –  2:00 PM.                                        Animal Embassy will uncover some of the mysteries of animal biology as we learn about classifications and habitats in the animal kingdom, as well as discover the life of an animal scientist. Gregory McAdams with Team Magic

Time Capsule to Mars!

Screen Shot 2014-06-27 at 3.51.20 PMJoin Dr. Daniel Burkey, Associate Dean of the UConn School of Engineering, at the Cheshire Public Library on Thursday, July 31 at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the Time Capsule to Mars™ (TC2M) Project. Participants will compose and record a group message at the library, to be uploaded to the Time Capsule and sent the 35 million miles from Earth to Mars.  This program is for all ages, but is especially geared towards students entering grades K-12.   Register on our website.

Survivors Swing Band

The Survivors Swing Band, a 7-piece professional jazz band, based in Connecticut, plays classic melodies from an era gone by–hot tunes and soothing ballads of the Swing Era– plus many of the wonderful melodies from the two decades that followed. Cooking with Chef John Bencivengo
Wednesday, June 18th at 6:30pm
Chef John Bencivengo of Chowder Pot lll will prepare 6 delicious dishes for you & will give out copies of the recipes. In addition, Chowder Pot lll will donate three Raffle Prizes you can win the evening of the event. There will be a donation fee of $5.00 per person to be paid at the door on the evening of the event to cover material costs. Seating is limited.  Please register.

Summer Reading Program
FIZZ, BOOM, READ! – will begin on Monday, June 23rd. We have a great summer planned for readers of all ages, including a wonderful line-up of fun kids’ programs that often have a science theme. And for those of you who are fans of “the Cheshire Library Cat,” we have some really cool t-shirts as giveaways again this year!

New Circulation Software at the Library
Monday, June 2nd

The library will be upgrading its software to a next-generation technology platform. This will enable us to offer new services in a rapid and cost-effective manner. We are working with the system provider to convert the current system to the new platform while ensuring minimal disruption of patron services. As with implementing any new enterprise-level software, the library may experience intermittent service issues during the brief transition period.
