Sunday Showcase Concert

Gaelic singer Maggie Carchrie will perform with her husband, bagpiper  Thomas Leigh, for our April Sunday Showcase Concert.  Maggie delights listeners with her crystal clear voice and her mastery of the unique sounds and rhythms of Gaelic Song.

Root Out Non-Native Invasive Plants 
Monday April 7, 7:00 pm

Many species of non-native invasive plants grow in Cheshire , taking over landscapes, destroying habitat diversity and posing threats to beneficial trees and shrubs.  Learn to identify and eradicate or control Oriental bittersweet, Japanese knotweed, garlic mustard, burning bush and multiflora rose without the widespread application of herbicides.

This program will be led by Suzanne Simone, Cheshire Environmental Planner, certified horticulturist and membership coordinator with the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group.

    Ecology of the North American Porcupine

Tuesday April 8, 7:00 pm
Did you know that the porcupine is the world’s 3rd largest rodent? Join us to learn more about this fascinating animal, common in Connecticut but seldom seen due to its solitary and mostly nocturnal habits. CT DEEP Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator Gerri Griswold will bring an un-releasable porcupine for an hour long program.

Lobby Vintage Book Sale

 

Visit the Vintage Lobby Book Sale going on now in the front lobby of the Cheshire Public Library.  Feel nostalgic for the finely made books of your youth, see rare out-of-print editions not normally found for sale anywhere, and find that favorite classic.  All books have been individually priced, most at under $5.   

Semi-Annual Book Sale Preview Night  

 

The Spring Sale Preview, our giant book sale preview, will be on Wednesday April 30.  This preview sale is only open to members of the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library, so sign up now.  Get first crack at thousands of bargain priced books before the general public.

Just a reminder that The Friends of the Cheshire Public Library is a 501(c)(3) tax-designated organization. This means you can become a member, donate books, music, DVDs, or give a monetary donation for a tax deduction. When you drop off donations, simply stop at the front desk of the library and ask for a donation receipt. You can make a difference to the library community and save on your taxes next year.

  • Headin’ Home – Sunday Showcase Concert

Hailing from Cheshire, Headin’ Home is a father/daughter duo featuring Dan Hedden on guitar and vocals and Christine Hedden on fiddle. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the pair will perform classic Celtic tunes.

  • Friends of the Library Vintage Booksale

The Friends of the Library are preparing their first-ever one-day Vintage Book Sale for Thursday March 13, 2014 from 9:30 am to 8:00 pm at the Cheshire Public Library.

All books have been individually priced and range from $1 to $100.  The great majority are under $5.  For your browsing pleasure, the books will be organized by decades. You may find that special book from your childhood or a out-of-print title you have always wanted to own!

  •  SAT Preparation Seminar

Well-known area language arts tutor Ellis Ratner will present a free SAT Preparation Seminar.   Mr. Ratner will address all aspects of the Reading and Writing Sections, including sentence completion, reading comprehension, grammar and essay writing.   Attendees will also receive, free of charge, an SAT Preparation Primer authored by Mr. Ratner.  Mr. Ratner’s qualifications and experience as SAT Preparation Tutor are detailed on his website, www.eratnertutor.com.

  • Mountain Lions in Connecticut              

Tuesday March 25, 2014, 7:00 pm

The mountain lion once roamed free and wild all across the Northeast. It was eradicated from this region in about 1890 and declared officially extinct here in 2011, only one month before a 140 pound male cougar was struck by a car and killed in Milford, Connecticut. If they are extinct then why do so many people see them and how do you explain the recent kill? Robert Tougias will answer this question and discuss the future of the large carnivore here in New England.  Robert Tougias is a nature author and has been studying the eastern cougar for two decades.  He is the author of the book The Quest For The Eastern Cougar.  Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Growing Herbs Organically will be presented at the Cheshire Public Library on Monday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m.
Carole Miller of the Topmost Herb Farm in Coventry, CT leads a show-and-tell lecture on growing herbs organically.  This program will provide an overview of her experiences in growing both culinary and medicinal herbs; which varieties grow best in our zone, best planting and harvesting methods, and a few organic strategies in dealing with pests and diseases.

During over thirty years as a full-time concert pianist, Frederick Moyer has established a vital musical career that has taken him to forty-three countries and to such far-flung venues as Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Sydney Opera House, Windsor Castle, Carnegie Recital Hall, Tanglewood, and the Kennedy Center. He has appeared as piano soloist with most of the major orchestras of the United States as well as many orchestras of Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Australia.

  • Forensic History of a Connecticut Slave: The Life and Death of Mr. Fortune
Monday February 10, 7:00 pm
Join us as Quinnipiac University School of Medicine Professor Richard Gonzalez describes his anthropological examination of the remains of an 18th-century Connecticut slave, Mr. Fortune. Fortune’s bones were used by his owner for medical research; hundreds of years later they were donated to the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury. More than 200 years after his death, Fortune was given a proper burial. This presentation provides a great example of how modern forensic techniques can contribute to the historical study of slavery and the use of slaves by physicians.

February 22, 2:00 pmPLANES (2013).  The world of CARS takes flight in PLANES, Disney’s high-flying animated comedy revved up with action and adventure. Join Dusty, a crop duster with sky-high dreams and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take on the world’s fastest flyers in the greatest air race ever. Wednesday, January 15, 7:00pm.
  This month we are discussing one of the great classics of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Set near the end of the 14th century, 29 travelers from vastly differing backgrounds set out one April for Canterbury on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Thomas Beckett. Travel is arduous and wearing, so to maintain their spirits this band of pilgrims entertains each other with a series of tall tales that span the spectrum of literary genres. Guitar and Mandolin featured in January Sunday Showcase

   Husband and wife duo Judy Handler and Mark Levesque blend Brazilian, Latin American, swing, gypsy, classical and folk music influences to create their sophisticated and expressive arrangements. Audiences respond with great enthusiasm to their extraordinary sound and the uplifting spirit of their music. They have performed over 1,500 concerts together throughout the Northeast and Midwest.   All ages welcome – no registration required.

Free Video Production  Training and Facilities at Cox Communications – Tuesday January 28, 7:00 pm.
   Cheshire Library will present David Smith, Cox Communications Cheshire Public Access, on Tuesday January 28 at 7:00pm. Mr. Smith will discuss the video production training and equipment that Cox Communications offers free of charge to residents of Cheshire, Southington and Meriden. This includes the use of field equipment, studio production and video editing.  Mr. Smith will also answer any questions participants may have about Cox’s local facility. Local Newspapers Available on Library Website

Want to check up on a news event from yesterday, last year, or even as far back as 25 years ago?

Then Cheshire Library has an online resource for you.

Cheshire residents have access to articles from the following Cheshire-area newspapers: Cheshire Herald 2007 to present; Meriden-Record Journal 12/7/1997 to present; New Haven Register 1988 to present.  This Newsbank database is indexed and searchable, and provides full-text articles from electronic editions.

To access Cheshire-area newspaper archives, online:

  • Go to the Cheshire Library homepage: www.cheshirelibrary.org
  • Mouse over the Research tab
  • Click on Newspapers and Magazines
  • Select the title you wish to search
  • Enter your Cheshire Library card number

Federal and Connecticut State Tax Forms Available


Federal and State tax forms and instruction booklets will be available in the Reference Department located on the Library’s lower level. Forms will be delivered to the library throughout the month of January, but please note that the library does not receive all forms and cannot guarantee when forms will be available. CaptureWe are writing our first Technology Plan and need your help to determine the best technology services for our library. I am completely hooked on Zinio, the library’s downloadable magazine service and want to tell everyone how terrific it is! Haven’t tried it?
