What’s Happening at Cheshire Library in December

It’s cold outside, but we’ve got some hot programming to warm you up this month. Here’s some of what’s in store for December.

December Art Show–Assemblages by Sarah Schneiderman

All month

This month’s exhibition by Sarah Schneiderman, MFA tells the stories of some barrier breakers from marginalized groups and celebrates their wins.

TAB: Teen Advisory Board (Grades 6-12)

The Teen Advisory Board is a group of teens in grades 6-12 who want to take an active part in helping the library and the community. Giveaways and snacks will be provided. Register on our volunteer Signup page and you will receive community service credit. You will earn 1 hour of community service credit for attending this event and 1 hour for every additional hour spent working on projects outside of the event.

Baby & Toddler Playgroup (Ages 0-36 months)

A playgroup for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers to socialize and connect. Children will enjoy unstructured play with their peers and age appropriate toys provided by the library. Registration is required. Best for ages 0-36 months and their caregivers.

Open Art Studio

Fridays from 1-3pm

Bring your works in progress and supplies to this weekly drop-in art program. This is an opportunity to create in a collaborative environment with other artists. No formal instruction will be provided, but informal critiquing for those who want it is encouraged. Table covers will be provided. There is a sink in the room for basic cleanup (please do not bring turpentine).

The Hot Flashes Holiday Concert

The Hot Flashes Holiday Concert

Saturday, December 3, 2022 2:00 – 3:00pm

The Hot Flashes will be returning to Cheshire to perform their popular holiday concert, blending upbeat, fun and familiar songs with more contemplative quiet music coupled with the Flashes’ captivating on-stage camaraderie.

Movie Matinees

Join us in the Library Loft for a movie on the big screen! No registration is required and movies begin at 1pm. Both movies this month are rated PG.

Cheshire Art League–Mike Berlinski Painting Demonstration

Wednesday, December 7, 2022, 6:30 – 8:00pm

The Cheshire Art League is hosting a presentation by guest artist, Mike Berlinski.  Much of Mike’s work is created outdoors in the “plein-air” tradition. For this demonstration, he will set up his French easel and paint a small painting from a photo, describing the process and talking about some of the basics of the painting process along the way. Registration is not required.

Cat Tales Writers Group

Thursday, December 8 2022, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Join us for a monthly open writing group that can help answer your questions on writing, editing, grammar, and publishing. Read a selection of your work to the group for general constructive feedback, or discuss a book you’ve read that might help someone else. Registration is required.

John Singer Sargent: Master with a Brush

Thursday, December 8, 2022, 7:00 – 8:15pm

John Singer Sargent, a masterful nineteenth-century artist, is celebrated for his Grand Manner portraiture of the European and American elite. This online program will explore his most beloved as well as rarely seen images, including portraits, forays into Impressionism and stunning watercolors. Registration required. R & R Book Group (Grades 3-5)

R & R (Reading & Relaxation) Book Group is an interactive book discussion group, that meets once a month. Refreshments will be served! December’s title: The Potato Chip Puzzles by Eric Berlin. Registration is required.

Caregiver Support Group

Wednesday, December 14, 2022, 12:00 – 1:00pm

A support group for caregivers to share tips, strategies, challenges, and successes. Caregivers of all types are welcome, including spouses and adult children caring for relatives, caregivers to children, and professional caregivers. Registration is required.

Adult Loft Knitters

Wednesday, December 14, 2022, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Come socialize, learn, and share your techniques with other knitters.  Experience the relaxing and calming effect of knitting. All levels of adult knitters are welcome. Please bring your own yarn and knitting needles (crocheters are also welcome!). This group meets monthly, please register in advance.

Preschool Playgroup

Thursday, December 15, 2022, 10:00 – 10:30am

A playgroup for preschoolers and their caregivers to socialize and connect. Preschoolers can enjoy unstructured play with their peers and age appropriate toys provided by the library. Best for ages 3-5 months and their caregivers. Registration is required.

Library After Hours: Bingo Night

Friday, December 16, 2022, 5:00 – 7:30pm

Bring your good luck charms to an evening of action-packed Bingo excitement! Snacks and drinks will be available, but feel free to bring your own. We will also have an ugly sweater competition! Wear your ugliest sweater and the winner will take home a special prize! Players of all ages are welcome. Registration is required for each person and will be checked at the door.  Bingo as well as other interactive games will be played from 5:30-7:00pm in the Mary Baldwin Room. The Children’s room, lobby, and lower level will be closed during this event

Family Storytime

Family Storytime is a drop-in, interactive storytime for children and family members! Learn through talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing! This storytime is for children of all ages. No registration is required.

Winter Ball (Ages 0-5)

You are cordially invited to the Winter Ball! Please join us on the twenty first of December at ten thirty in the morning at the Cheshire Public Library. There will be music, dancing, playing, and crafts. We request formal attire. Best for ages 0-5. Please register each child. Costumes or formal attire is strongly encouraged.

Cocoa & Cookies Storytime

Cocoa & Cookies Storytime is a drop-in, interactive storytime for children of all ages! Enjoy cocoa & cookies and learn through talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing! This storytime is for children of all ages. No registration is required.

Jigsaw Puzzle Competition

Tuesday, December 27, 2022, 2:00 – 4:30pm

Looking to get out of the house in the middle of all the winter holidays? Grab your best puzzling buddies and see who’s the fastest puzzler of them all! Winner gets a puzzle prize and bragging rights! This is a great opportunity to do something fun with visiting friends and family. Sign up as a team of 3-5 people, or sign up as a single or pair and we’ll place you on a larger team. You’ll have two hours to complete a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle, provided by the library. Please leave personal puzzling equipment at home. We will provide puzzle trays and snacks. Registration required. To accommodate as many participants as possible, registrations will go on the wait list for staff to review, and you will be notified when your registration is approved. Priority will be given to Cheshire residents.

What’s Happening at Cheshire Library in December

We’re working our way back to in-person programming this month, with a variety of programs meeting in-person, on-line, or a hybrid of both. Here’s what we’ve got planned for December:

December Teen Volunteering Challenges

All month long

Earn community service hours by submitting a photo, video, or other content that may be added to CPL’s social media pages! Each submission will be awarded 2 community service hours. December’s challenges include:

  • Art: It’s the month of Decembird! You can draw, paint, or sculpt, but make it for the birds- 12 birds of Christmas, backyard winter birds, or whatever kind of bird you like!
  • Writing: We challenge you to write a tiny holiday story! Any holiday. Any story. Fact or fiction or something in between. But it must be 200 words or less.
  • Food: December 8th is National Brownie Day- select your favorite brownie recipe, and bake a batch of brownies. Share them with someone special!
  • Reading: Read a book about a holiday you don’t celebrate at home.
  • More Reading: Read a book while wrapped in a favorite blanket. Add a cup of hot cocoa if you’d like.
  • Even More Reading: Think ahead: What’s something you want to learn more about in the New Year? Read a book on that topic to get a jump start!
  • Extra Credit: Change your life forever by learning a new language- check out Mango Languages on our website, and send us a screenshot of what you are working on… ganbatte!!

Book Buzz Teen Book Club: Two Can Keep a Secret

All month long

This month we are going to read Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus. Books will be provided and are yours to keep! To pick up your Book Buzz book, starting on November 1st, you must register for this event. Then you can come into the library and pick up your book at the Children’s Desk. Join us online here (our Google Classroom page) to share and hear our different points of view about the book! This book discussion group will be available all month -and beyond- and you can interact with us and post your thoughts any time that’s convenient for you.

Cheshire Art League: The Art of Colonial America

The Cheshire Art League is hosting lecturer Bob Potter, who will discuss the The Art of Colonial America, and featuring the works of artists such as Charles Wilson Peale, Benjamin West, Gilbert Stuart, John Singleton Copley, and more. This is a hybrid program, register to attend either in-person or online.

Minecraft Mania

Thursdays, December 2, 9, and 16, 2021, 3:30-5:00pm

Join Minecraft Mania for an afternoon of challenges, building, and creativity! Learn physics, statistics, and engineering concepts through hands-on activities! You will be given access to a free Minecraft account. Best for kids and teens in grades 5-12. This is a hybrid program, register to attend either in-person or online.

Theremin and Piano

Friday, December 3, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Join us as we explore the music and the history of the Theremin, one of the world’s strangest insturments. The library’s own Jared Goldman and pianist Perla Palomo will perform a mix of modern hits and classics. This concert will feature music as well as a look at how the instrument works and it’s uses throughout the century. This is an in-person event at the Cheshire Library. Meditative Mondays

Mondays, December 6, 13, 20 from 2:00 – 3:00pm

Learn to master your thoughts, be in control of your mental & emotional well-being, and discover a world you never thought possible. This 7 session online class will be teaching you various meditation techniques along with topics of awareness for inner transformation. Dress comfortably and enjoy the experience! Ball and Socket Project: Where Do We Stand?

Please join us as Ilona Somogyi, President and Co-Founder of the Ball & Socket Arts, Inc. will update the community on construction progress and answer questions. Chinese for Families

Tuesdays, December 7, 14, 21, 28, 2021 4:00 – 5:00pm

(classes will continue in January)

We are so excited to partner with NeuLingo, a live, engaging online Chinese program to offer free Chinese language and culture classes for children! Join us to go on a virtual tour of the most charming cities in China, learn and experience the traditions and stories behind Chinese festivals, pick up a few Chinese words, and practice them with other children through meaningful social interactions! This is an online program, best for ages 5-12. Register once per family to attend all classes.

Author Talk: No Dead Air by Larry Rifkin

Wednesday, December 8, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Larry Rifkin’s career in Connecticut broadcasting spans five decades and includes varied roles including television programming executive, radio personality and now podcaster. In his new book, No Dead Air: Career Reflections from the TV Executive who Kept Barney the Dinosaur from Becoming Extinct, Larry Rifkin reflects on an improbable career that spawned two groundbreaking hits, ‘Barney & Friends’ and ‘UConn Women’s Basketball’. This is an in-person event at the Cheshire Library. Learn HTML/CSS/JavaScript programming! For grades 6 through 12. Each person will need their own laptop (it can be one you bring from home- or you can use one of the library’s laptops) and you’ll need a personal email/password in order to open an account on the website repl.i t. Support Through Meditation – Weekly Zoom Event

Tuesdays,  December 1-22, 11:00am – 12:00pm

This introductory meditation class is geared towards helping you through these anxious and challenging times. You will learn various meditation techniques that you will practice in session and guidance to perform meditation on your own. Presenter Tia Mandrozos will explain the purpose of meditation and interact with the participants to provide the help needed and to address specific concerns. Cheshire Art League – Watercolor Demo

CT Partnership for Long Term Care

Just one year in a Connecticut nursing home can cost more than $162,100. And Medicare and health insurance may only cover a fraction of these costs. If you’re 40 or older, long-term care insurance approved by the State’s Connecticut Partnership for Long-Term Care should be part of your retirement plan. These policies provide asset protection, protect against inflation, and – most important – give you peace of mind through your retirement years. Guest speaker Aldo Pantano, from the CT Partnership for Long-Term Care, with the State Office of Policy and Management will present this free seminar. Comics Club: New Kid

This month we’ll make our own memory boxes in addition to discussing the book, New Kid by Jerry Craft. Please read the book before attending this virtual event. Family Holiday Baking

Join Katie, Registered Dietitian from Food Explorers and learn to make delicious holiday treats! Ingredients needed are on the Event Calendar listings for each program. The Nutcracker performed by Brass City Ballet

Brass City Ballet celebrates the magic of Christmas in a live, narrated performance of The Nutcracker. Children and adults will delight in the story of Clara and her journey through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of the Sweets where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and all her delicious treats. Play & Learn

Saturday, December 14, 2019, 10:00 – 11:00am

Our drop-in play group for children and their caregivers! Children and their caregivers explore interactive and sensory activities together, encouraging the development of early literacy skills.  We will have lots of movement, songs, and a short storytime during the last 20 minutes of the program. Best for ages 2 to 5 years old, no registration required.

Mattatuck Museum Community Art Discussion

The Mattatuck Museum is looking to engage area residents in a community art discussion based upon some of our exhibitions. Valerie Rodgers, Lead Museum Educator, will present this discussion using images of paintings, artworks, archival photographs and more! Registration is required.

Do you have many presents to wrap this holiday season?  Need a place to spread out?  Need to get away from prying eyes?  Join us for a holiday wrapping event.  Each participant will have a table, 1 roll of paper, scissors and tape.  Feel free to bring your own supplies but please note you must complete your wrapping by 8PM. Space is limited for this fun event, Registration will take place two weeks before and tea/coco will be offered.

The Nutcracker Ballet

Saturday, December 1, 2018, 1:30 and 3:30PM

Brass City Ballet celebrates the magic of Christmas in a live, narrated performance of The Nutcracker. Children and adults will delight in the story of Clara and her journey through the Land of Snow to the Kingdom of the Sweets where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and all her delicious treats. Seating is limited and registration is required. Thank you to the Friends of the Cheshire Library for funding this special event!

Atwater-Donnelly Celtic Holiday Concert

Sunday, December 2, 2018, 2:00 – 4:00PM

In celebration of winter, light, and American diversity, Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly sing ancient and new songs about Christmas, Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. This award-winning, internationally acclaimed duo are long-time audience favorites at Cheshire Library for their programs of traditional American and Celtic folk songs and percussive dance. CT’s Remarkable Jewish Women

Their accomplishments are as varied as their struggles, and their stories inspire us to create new history. Caring Crafts: Socks for Seniors

Caring Crafts is a new program for school-age kids (grades K-6) to have fun making things, while making the world a better place. This week we’re making grippy socks for seniors in nursing homes. Want to donate crafting materials for an upcoming program? We’re accepting soft fabric like fleece, textured fabric like denim and nubby chenille, and sewing notions like buttons, velcro, and zippers. New Movie Thursday ~ Crazy Rich Asians

Did you miss the screening of a film you wanted to see in theatres?  Join us for the first Thursday of the month for a screening of a recently released film.  December’s  movie is Crazy Rich Asians  :  Rachel Chu is happy to accompany her longtime boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. She’s also surprised to learn that Nick’s family is extremely wealthy and he’s considered one of the country’s most eligible bachelors. Registration is appreciated for this adult program.

Canta Y Baila Conmigo Demo – A Music Together Program

Small World Languages and Musical Folk have teamed up to bring to you Canta Y Baila Conmigo – a Music Together program. Designed for beginning Spanish speakers and native speakers alike, these playful, interactive classes naturally and organically integrate language learning with music learning. The idea is to help your child learn Spanish through immersion in both music and language.  Best for ages 2-5. Connecticut 169 Club

From the quaint splendor of the town of Kent in the northwest hills of Connecticut to the great restaurants that dot the shoreline of Westbrook to New Britain’s industrial roots, travel and history author Martin “Marty” Podskoch is hoping to give Connecticut residents a chance to explore every municipality in the State of Conn. with his new book, Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring Connecticut. Podskoch will share stories and information about our great state. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Registration is required.

Join us at the library for an open writing group that can help answer your questions on writing, editing, grammar, and publishing.
