We’re getting artsy and bookish this month with programs featuring art and artists, and SIX different book clubs!

Navigating College Admissions in 2022

Tuesday, March 1, 2022, 7:00 – 8:00pm

Learn how COVID-19 has changed the college admissions landscape and how it will affect Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. This presentation is led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out For College, LLC. Registration is required for this online program.

Cheshire Art League: Zbigniew Grzyb

Wednesday, March 2, 2022, 6:30 – 8:00pm

The Cheshire Art League is hosting artist Zbigniew Grzyb at their in-person March meeting. Zbigniew will demonstrate his approach to still life drawing, beginning with basics such as composition and structure and working to final stages including details and shading. Meditative Mondays

Mondays: March 7, 14, 21, 28, 2:00 – 3:00pm

Learn to master your thoughts, be in control of your mental & emotional well-being, and discover a world you never thought possible. Presenter Tia Mandrozos will explain the purpose of meditation and interact with the participants to provide the help needed in these online classes. Frida Kahlo: Love, Pain, and Painting

Monday, March 7, 2022, 7:00 – 8:15pm

Frida Kahlo has become a household name in recent years, with movies, books and countless products dedicated to her art and likeness. This program will explore her life and her work, particularly as it relates to the trolley accident she survived as a teen and her passionate and often tumultuous marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera. Chess Club for Beginners (Grades 4-8)

Tuesdays: March 8, 15, 22, 29, 5:00 – 6:00pm

DIG USA Chess is partnering with the Cheshire Public Library to run this in-person beginner weekly chess program. Let’s Draw Cartoons! with Rick Stromoski (Grades 2-8)

Thursdays from 4:00 – 5:00pm

Award winning cartoonist and humorous illustrator, Rick Stromoski, will teach you how to create your own cartoon drawings during these online events! All you need is a stack of paper and something to draw with! Registration is required for these online programs.

Trivia Night

Come by yourself or bring your friends. The Queen of Beer: How Women Shaped Brewing’s History from Ancient Times to the Present

From thousands of years ago until today, women have shaped the way beer is enjoyed and celebrated. Learn about ancient and medieval brewing practices and how women were (and still are) the queens of beer! Registration is required for this online program.

Cheshire Anime Club

Can’t get enough Anime and Manga? Be an “Otaku” and join the Cheshire Anime Club! We’ll meet monthly, read and talk about what’s hot in the world of Manga, and watch some of the latest Anime releases. For grades 7-12, no registration required. Loft Knitters

Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Come socialize, learn, share your techniques with other knitters.  Experience the relaxing and calming effect of knitting. All levels of adult knitters’ welcome. We’re working our way back to in-person programming this month, with a variety of programs meeting in-person, on-line, or a hybrid of both. Here’s what we’ve got planned for December:

December Teen Volunteering Challenges

All month long

Earn community service hours by submitting a photo, video, or other content that may be added to CPL’s social media pages! Each submission will be awarded 2 community service hours. December’s challenges include:

  • Art: It’s the month of Decembird! You can draw, paint, or sculpt, but make it for the birds- 12 birds of Christmas, backyard winter birds, or whatever kind of bird you like!
  • Writing: We challenge you to write a tiny holiday story! Any holiday. Any story. Fact or fiction or something in between. But it must be 200 words or less.
  • Food: December 8th is National Brownie Day- select your favorite brownie recipe, and bake a batch of brownies. Share them with someone special!
  • Reading: Read a book about a holiday you don’t celebrate at home.
  • More Reading: Read a book while wrapped in a favorite blanket. Add a cup of hot cocoa if you’d like.
  • Even More Reading: Think ahead: What’s something you want to learn more about in the New Year? Read a book on that topic to get a jump start!
  • Extra Credit: Change your life forever by learning a new language- check out Mango Languages on our website, and send us a screenshot of what you are working on… ganbatte!!

Book Buzz Teen Book Club: Two Can Keep a Secret

All month long

This month we are going to read Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus. Books will be provided and are yours to keep! To pick up your Book Buzz book, starting on November 1st, you must register for this event. Then you can come into the library and pick up your book at the Children’s Desk. Join us online here (our Google Classroom page) to share and hear our different points of view about the book! This book discussion group will be available all month -and beyond- and you can interact with us and post your thoughts any time that’s convenient for you.

Cheshire Art League: The Art of Colonial America

The Cheshire Art League is hosting lecturer Bob Potter, who will discuss the The Art of Colonial America, and featuring the works of artists such as Charles Wilson Peale, Benjamin West, Gilbert Stuart, John Singleton Copley, and more. This is a hybrid program, register to attend either in-person or online.

Minecraft Mania

Thursdays, December 2, 9, and 16, 2021, 3:30-5:00pm

Join Minecraft Mania for an afternoon of challenges, building, and creativity! Learn physics, statistics, and engineering concepts through hands-on activities! You will be given access to a free Minecraft account. Best for kids and teens in grades 5-12. This is a hybrid program, register to attend either in-person or online.

Theremin and Piano

Friday, December 3, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Join us as we explore the music and the history of the Theremin, one of the world’s strangest insturments. The library’s own Jared Goldman and pianist Perla Palomo will perform a mix of modern hits and classics. This concert will feature music as well as a look at how the instrument works and it’s uses throughout the century. This is an in-person event at the Cheshire Library. Masks must be worn and social distancing must be observed for the entire event. Registration is required.

Meditative Mondays

Mondays, December 6, 13, 20 from 2:00 – 3:00pm

Learn to master your thoughts, be in control of your mental & emotional well-being, and discover a world you never thought possible. Ball and Socket Project: Where Do We Stand?

Please join us as Ilona Somogyi, President and Co-Founder of the Ball & Socket Arts, Inc. will update the community on construction progress and answer questions. Chinese for Families

Tuesdays, December 7, 14, 21, 28, 2021 4:00 – 5:00pm

We are so excited to partner with NeuLingo, a live, engaging online Chinese program to offer free Chinese language and culture classes for children! Join us to go on a virtual tour of the most charming cities in China, learn and experience the traditions and stories behind Chinese festivals, pick up a few Chinese words, and practice them with other children through meaningful social interactions! This is an online program, best for ages 5-12. Register once per family to attend all classes.

Author Talk: No Dead Air by Larry Rifkin

Wednesday, December 8, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Larry Rifkin’s career in Connecticut broadcasting spans five decades and includes varied roles including television programming executive, radio personality and now podcaster. In his new book, No Dead Air: Career Reflections from the TV Executive who Kept Barney the Dinosaur from Becoming Extinct, Larry Rifkin reflects on an improbable career that spawned two groundbreaking hits, ‘Barney & Friends’ and ‘UConn Women’s Basketball’. This is an in-person event at the Cheshire Library. Join us virtually for an open writing group that can help answer your questions on writing, editing, grammar, and publishing. Light Pollution: What it is and why it matters

Thursday, November 4, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Join dark sky advocate Leo Smith (International Dark Skies (IDS) Northeast Regional Director and Chair of the Connecticut Chapter) for an overview of the adverse effects of light pollution on people, animals and plants, together with a review of Connecticut laws and regulations and best practices individuals can use to reduce light pollution.  Registration is required. We are planning to hold this program in-person but will switch to Zoom if circumstances warrant. If that is the case, a link will be sent out to registrants prior to the program. 

The Magic of Resilience with Joyce Saltman

Friday, November 5, 2021, 3:00 – 4:30pm

Back by popular demand join us as Joyce Saltman will make us laugh and learn with her informational presentation. Join us as Joyce offers a blueprint (based on extensive research and close to 100 interviews of resilient folks of all ages) for achieving good health and joy in the years to come. The Natural and Cultural History of Cheshire Through an Ecological Lens

How did geology shape Cheshire’s development and history?  Laurie Sanders, who grew up in Cheshire and was the town’s first environmental planner, will delve into the connection between people and the environment and how one affects the other. Art @ The Library – Urban Sketching

Monday, November 8, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Enjoy 90 minutes of sketching in real time a favorite subject of urban sketchers- their tools of the trade: pencils, pens, brushes! Urban sketching is about filling a sketchbook with sketches of people, places and events but it is good to start small and hone your drawing skills by sketching everyday objects. All levels welcome to this workshop, all materials provided. Come and have fun. Registration required.

Coding Club: Roblox 

Wednesdays in October, 4:00 – 5:00pm

Happy Code Club will teach students in grades 5-8 the basics of scripting in Lua to add gameplay elements like traps and other game features during this virtual event. Technology Requirements: PC or Mac with wifi, Scroll mouse. No chromebooks or tablets. Roblox Studio must be installed and tested prior to class. This program meets four times: October 6, 13, 20, & 27. Register once to attend all four sessions.

¡Arte! A Bilingual Art Class for Kids! 

Fridays in October, 10:00 – 10:45am

Join us for a virtual bilingual art and music class presented by Mi Amigo Hamlet from Go Creative Programs. Children will learn simple Spanish vocabulary through music, movement, and art! Mixville Family Halloween Bash!

Friday, October 15, 2021, 5:00 – 8:00pm

Bring your own pumpkin to turn into a Jack-O-Lantern and display on the Mixville Park hillside before you take it home. Artsplace instructors and volunteers will be on-hand to provide stencils and guidance. Carving tools provided for use on first come/first served basis (or bring your own) as well as glow sticks to illuminate the pumpkins. Pumpkin carving and decorating will take place 5:00-6:00pm (pre-registration required for this portion of the event). Pumpkins will be lit by 6:15pm. Hocus-Pocus, everyone’s favorite family Halloween movie, will start at dusk. Bring a picnic dinner, your blankets, chairs and some bug spray!

Coalition for a Sustainable Cheshire: Going for Silver!

Monday, October 18, 2021, 6:30 – 8:00pm

Since early 2020, the CSC has successfully collaborated with our municipal government, local non-profits, and small Cheshire businesses to build relationships and promote sustainable projects. These projects and others helped Cheshire earn “Bronze” certification with the state-wide initiative, Sustainable CT.  Coalition members will share information about what it means for Cheshire to go for “Silver” and how you can take small (or large!) steps to improve our community with simple everyday actions. Earn community service hours by submitting a photo, video, or other content that may be added to CPL’s social media pages! Each submission will be awarded 2 community service hours. September’s challenges include:

  • Art: It’s Sketchtember!  Challenge yourself and others to sketch!
  • Writing: It’s time to go back to school- write about your goals and vision for the new school year.
  • Food: September 26th is National Pancake Day- so get those hotcakes on the griddle, it’s time to make some pancakes!
  • Reading: September 6th is National Read a Book Day- whatever format you prefer, grab or download the book on the top of your TBR pile and dive in!
  • More Reading: Read a nonfiction book by or about a Latinx person to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month.
  • Even More Reading: Head to the library during Library Card Sign-Up Month this September to get a library card! If you already have one, check out a book you’ve wanted to read!

If you participate in the challenges, earn community service credit by submitting your creations so we can share them on our social media pages.

This month we are going to read They Both Die at the Endby Adam Silvera. Books will be provided and are yours to keep! To pick up your Book Buzz book, starting on September 1st, you must register for this event. Then you can come into the library and pick up your book at the Children’s Desk.

Family Movie Night at Mixville: Coco

Friday, September 17, 2021, 6:45 – 8:30pm

Admission to Mixville Park is free for movie-goers.  Just tell the staff at the entrance gate that you are there for the movie.  The movie will begin shortly after 6:45 but you are welcome to come early and enjoy a picnic or a stroll at beautiful Mixville (1300 Notch Road, Cheshire, CT). Don’t forget to bring your blankets or chairs and some bug spray! This summer family movie series is funded by the Friends of the Cheshire Public Library and co-sponsored by the library and Cheshire’s Park and Recreation Department.

Teddy Bear Picnic at Bartlem Park

Bring along a teddy bear (or another favorite stuffed animal) for an outdoor storytime at Bartlem Park (520 South Main Street, Cheshire, CT) full of books, music, and movement! Be sure to bring a blanket or towel to sit on! We will meet at the fields or pavilion behind the playground. Best for ages 3-5, registration begins September 19.
